When you reduce the size, pages are resampled as JPEG images: the text stops being selectable.
Upload forms, job portals, banks and government sites often accept only files under a certain size: 100 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB, 2 MB. Most compressors give you a few vague levels (low, medium, high) and leave you to guess. PDFtoByte works the other way round: you move a slider, see the estimated size and a live preview of the first page, and stop exactly where you want.
No. The document is processed inside your browser and is never sent to any server. Close the page and nothing is left behind.
The slider shows an estimate. In our tests the real file usually came out a little under it, and you see the real size before you download. If it lands slightly over your limit, lower the slider a bit and compress again.
To make the file smaller, the pages are turned into JPEG images. The text stays readable to the eye but can no longer be copied or searched. If you need to keep selectable text, use a compressor that only recompresses the images instead.
Below a certain size the pages become hard to read. The preview shows how the first page will look: if the text is no longer legible, choose a larger size, or split the document into parts.
Start from a ready-made target: 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 300 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB, 2 MB, 5 MB.
